I Just Lost My Job: How Am I Going To Tell My Kids?

One of the responsibilities of a human resources professional is to let employees know that their job has been eliminated. It is seldom easy to do and often painful for the person who is hearing the news.

Just recently, I was involved in communicating a large layoff to employees at a Fortune 500 company. I sat with one woman after she had heard the news to tell her about the career transition services she could take advantage of. The woman was in shock and not ready to hear about transition services for her self. She said out loud several times, “How am I going to tell my kids this?”

When I asked her why she would not want to tell her kids, she said that her teenage son had been having a hard year in school and she did not want to upset him. She asked my advice.

Recently, my mother-in-law died. Losing a loved one and losing a job have similarities. Both involve losing something you love. Both involve change. I thought back to how my husband and I told our children that their grandmother had died. I remembered that we told them the truth, answered their questions and assured them that we would stay a strong family.

If you lose your job, here are some pointers for how to tell your children.

First, take care of you. Take stock of the talents you have to offer another employer. Take stock of the good things you have in your life.

If you have a “significant other” in your life, tell your partner before you tell your children.

Together, tell the kids. Use simple language and short sentences. Tell the truth. “I want to tell you some news. Today, my job was eliminated. The company eliminated many jobs, including mine, because they needed to save money.”

Anticipate your children’s concerns. Assure your children that they will be okay. “I am going to look for another job. Our family will be okay.”

If you are worried about how you will survive financially, figure out how you can cut costs until you find another job.

Include your children in cutting costs but let them know it will be temporary. If your child asks you to buy him or her something and you need to wait until your finances are in better shape, say, “We can buy this for you once I find another job, okay?”

Let your children how you are feeling but also assure them that you will be okay. “I am upset that this happened but it has happened to many other people who have gone on and found other jobs. I will be fine.”

Answer their questions honestly and simply.

Allow your children to talk to their friends about this. Allow them to confide in others.

Hug them.

Finally, realize that your children will be closely watching how you handle this challenge in your life. When they see you bounce back from a setback, it will give them confidence to do the same in their lives.

I told the woman I was counseling to tell her son the truth. To tell him how she was feeling. To tell him that she would be okay. To tell him that he would be okay. And to tell him that she loves him.

Broken Legs are Serious Risks for Italian Greyhounds

We have two Italian Greyhounds (affectionately referred to as IG’s). Dixie was two when we brought Yankee home. I read that IG’s are happier with another animal and thought that another IG would be half as much trouble and twice as much fun. After a few days of establishing a pack order the two became great friends.

For those not familiar with IG’s, they are about ¼ scale of the famous racetrack breed. In their finest form they look half-starved, even though it may look cruel to most pet owners, that’s when they are the most active and truly happiest. A pound or two slows them down tremendously and even becomes dangerous.

They are fearless leapers. No matter how many times I try to explain to them Newton’s Laws of Gravity, it does no good. Heart-stopping stories abound over the internet chat rooms about their Superman like tendencies. The extra weight increases the risk of broken bones.

They are also tremendous jumpers. In her hey-day Dixie could jump straight up over 6 feet high to grab a snack. At will she could jump flat-footed on to the dining room table, landing as soft as a butterfly with sore feet.

But more than anything, those long thin legs were meant for speed. Unfortunately, they can run faster than they can think. IG’s become single focused when running. Twice I have nearly had a heart attack as they ran full speed into each other from opposite directions, tumbling like out of control race cars. Chasing after one another, they’d scrape the trees so close that bark literally flew off and misjudging turns, wiping-out in to brick walls and other immoveable objects was a common occurrence.

Well, one day the inevitable finally happened, Dixie went into a door facing and snapped her left leg. The break was clean through. Her little paw dangling 90 degrees from just below her knee told me everything I didn’t want to know.

I did the best I could to immobilize it as my wife called the vet. As soon as we got there they took her back for x-rays. She was obviously in a lot of pain but had quit yelping after I first picked her up. In fact, she was the calmest of any of us.

My wife was crying because of the dog. I was crying because of the bill. If I would’ve known how much it was going to cost in the lobby I would have cried a lot harder. This was going to be a big payday for the vet.

The choices were simple, they could try a cast, but it would probably not set right because of the very tiny, toothpick-thin fibula. The vet recommended a titanium plate and screws.

The surgery alone would run $1,000. The total bill would actually end up over $1,800. I could have bought 3 Dixies and a lifetime supply of dog food for that much. My wife got mad because she didn’t like my sense of humor, but I wasn’t joking. I know the power of the purse, and I have no intention of getting hit by hers again so I relented.

The next morning they put in the custom made plate and screws. It was really tricky because the screws had to be big enough to hold things together, but small enough not to interrupt blood flow.

More painful (if you can believe that) than the vet bill, was the care and attention Dixie would require for the next 3 to 4 months. For the next three months she would have to be kept in a crate at all times.

For the first three weeks when we took her out to go potty we would have to hold on to her. No walking was allowed. It is absolutely crucial for dogs to find the perfect spot to relieve themselves, not any spot will do. Humans cannot fully appreciate this until they miss an entire showing of Monday Night Football.

A few weeks after the surgery we got a bit of good news, the leg was healing fine. She would still have to be crated, but we could put her on a real tight lead and let her stand on her three good legs to go potty. In about two to three week intervals after that she was allowed a little more freedom.

Slowly things got back to normal. The first month after she got full clearance to run was rather tiring. Each jump, every full trot run brought held breaths in anticipation of another vet trip.

It has taken two full years to get to where she no longer yelps or pulls up after a full run or sharp turn. She has lost a noticeable amount of her initial burst. She can longer track down Yankee from behind, but they still love to chase each other in the backyard and that gives us great pleasure. If you’ve never seen these gracious runners play at full speed then you cannot fully appreciate why we went to all the trouble and expense.

My wife loves to show Dixie’s scar to anyone who comes by. She talks about the whole adventure like it was The Good Old Days. Out of fear that my wife will read this article I will state that if I had to do it again I would. But I won’t like it.

The other week my wife went out for her morning run. She came back an hour and a half later limping up the front walk like a wounded puppy, a pained look on her face. Somewhere around mile two, she said, she'd experienced a sharp pain in her right calf muscle. Thinking she just had to “run through it,” she did the dumbest thing you can do: she ran through it. It got worse.

I did the same thing a couple years ago, but I wasn't doing anything so noble as running. I'd been chasing our dog, who was intent on making a delivery to a neighbor's lawn. Determined to evade capture, he ran up a little hill. I got only halfway up before something in my leg popped, sending me into paroxysms of pain.

I had one of the kids run home and get a hockey stick for me to use as a crutch, while I sat on the neighbor's grass, watching our dog victoriously finishing his business. I hobbled around for the next two weeks, leaning on a cane I'd found by the front door — the kids called me “Gramps.”

Because I'd been through it and knew it wasn't the end of the world, I (stupidly) told my wife she should keep off it and use a cane. This did not sit well with a woman who had been training for a half-marathon but was now rolling on the floor in agony.

And I wasn't much better later that week, when I reminded my wife that I'd promised my sister that we'd drive six hours to attend a family get-together. My wife, who I'm sure didn't relish the thought of 12 hours in a car, gamely and lamely agreed.

Our kids would stay behind for the day. Our 13-year-old daughter — taking pity on my wife and knowing it was going to be a cold weekend — offered to lend her mother her prize possession: her Uggs.

For those who don't have teenage girls, “Uggs” are extremely expensive suede boots lined with fur. I'm sure they're warm, but the real point, at least for these girls, is to make sure your friends know you own a pair. You can try to get away with wearing less expensive bargain brand substitutes, but girls will quickly discover you're wearing fake Uggs ( also known as “Fuggs”). We'd taken to referring to my daughter's dark-chocolate Uggs as “Chuggs.”

That Saturday, my wife and I woke very early and made our way out to the car. I felt a little guilty as she tried to find a comfortable way to sit. I even offered that she could stretch out in the back seat if that would help.

The drive to Philadelphia also turned out to be a drive into a major snowstorm, and ended up taking a lot longer than I'd planned. As we drove along, inching along past an accident on the turnpike, my wife's cell phone rang. It was our daughter calling from home. I turned down the radio as my wife listened.

“No, honey,” my wife said into her phone. “We're not going out that much. We're just going to lunch.” She listened some more. I couldn't hear what my daughter was saying, but she seemed very concerned.

“Don't worry, sweetheart!” my wife repeated. “It's just a short walk from the car to the restaurant! It'll be fine!” Another big pause.

“Don't get upset!” my wife said. “There's a little bit of ice and snow, but nothing to be concerned about!” I heard a moaning sound from the phone, coming from a daughter who was clearly concerned. My wife listened for a while longer, making assuring noises, and then hung up.

I sat there in the driver's seat, mentally beating myself up. Maybe I hadn't been thoughtful enough, dragging my wife on a trip with her hurt leg. My own daughter seemed to care more than I did.

“That's the difference between males and females,” I said, shaking my head. “She's worried about you that much?”

My wife looked up, confused.

“She wants you to be careful on your bum leg!” I said. My wife shook her head.

“She wasn't calling to check on me, she was calling to check on her CHUGGS!” she said, mouth agape. “She said she didn't know I was going to wear them in bad weather when she agreed to loan them to me. She demanded that I take them off!”

“Wow,” I said, with just a little bit of pride and just a little bit of concern. “That's my daughter!”

You must realize one thing before you do anything.

While you wonder how to get your wife back or if it’s even possible, …it is important to determine if there is even hope to getting her back.

The way to do that is understanding if there is love still existing between you and your wife or ex wife. The opposite of love is complete indifference. If your wife or ex wife shows anger, jealousy, or some sort of emotion towards your actions then there is hope and this could mean that she still cares about you. Sometimes emotions can be tough to translate but any emotion at all is good news for you.

This is vitally important to keep in mind, because the opposite of love is NOT hate, it is once again…

…complete and utter indifference.

There are obviously things that were wrong with your marriage long before it came down to a divorce or separation. Maybe you’re not even there yet but it’s looking inevitable. The fact is that you still care for your wife and want her back, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this searching for a way to get back together and mend the damage.

I’ve seen countless marriages end in divorce and usually it was very nasty. The old saying “everything ends badly otherwise it wouldn’t end” has some truth to it. There are particular things that you’ve done wrong which led up to the reasons why your marriage is in trouble or has already ended.

Now don’t worry, because I’m not going to stand on a soap box preaching to you and pointing fingers… You wouldn’t hear a thing I said anyway even if the advice I gave you would solve world hunger. How do I get my wife back? That’s what you care about right?

First of all, there is some important advice and opening moves that I will give you in one moment, but I would like to point out that I am not a psychologist, nor a therapist, or any other kind of “-ist.” I’m just a common Joe that has found some incredible “magic” from an author of some very unorthodox methods. They work their magic almost immediately and I was convinced by seeing the real proof in my own marriage and the magic that this worked for me.

There is some key magic tricks to start the groundwork for getting your wife back. First of all if you’re going through a divorce or separation you need to agree with her. Yes, that’s correct. You might believe this is crazy but you need to give your wife her space. Give her time to miss you.

More importantly stop doing all the wrong things that will drive your wife further away from you!

During a divorce or separation we men do stupid things such as harassing her with insisting phone calls, texting, emails, …whatever it may be that your trying to communicate with her. All the pleading begging and arguing is not helping your case at all. Stop all communication for now, and give her the space she needs and then you develop your opening move to get your wife back. Give her some time to miss you.

How do I get my wife back?

Give her time to see you are O.K!

Let her have some space to herself and you will see that the lack of contact by you will start to play a psychological magic trick. Your wife will have the needed time to miss you and then she will begin to see that you are fine without her.

This plays on some magic tricks that T.W. Jackson outlines in his book I’ve read. Now this is important because I want you to understand that the advice I’ve read in his book is not a magic product that gives you super natural powers to control your wife’s mind and make her fall in love with you hopelessly head over heels again. That is completely irrational.

Find out your opening moves, …your game plan, …your strategies, and what you’re doing wrong. Remember, the opposite of love is indifference. NOT hate. Stop communication, start giving her some space, and begin the work to get your wife back.
